Why Angels and Seagulls?

August 19, 2011

Not everyone is familiar with the indie band called The Moldy Peaches (Adam Green and Kimya Dawson). Actually, I would have not discovered their music if I did not get the chance to watch Juno, which starred Ellen Page and Michael Cera. We were required to watch the movie for our Adolescence and Adulthood class, by then, I was fascinated by the soundtrack of the movie, and the movie's theme itself.

Kimya Dawson's songs were used in most parts of the movie, and I became addicted to her kind of music. So I grabbed her discography and anything that I could find (including The Moldy Peaches' and Adam Green's albums) and started feeding my addiction in this kind of music. The song Angels and Seagulls is in the Hidden Vagenda (2004 album) and it was one of my faves.

I love the simplicity of the rhythm and the lyrics of the song. There is something with how Kimya Dawson writes songs; it is as if she was writing on her journal and it just happens that the words rhyme. She also plays with words, on purpose.

And so my favorite line from the song goes:

"Singing and swimming and being happy,
 Weightless and painless eternally."

Yeah, I know, I did not quite explain why this is called "Of Angels and Seagulls" I just loved the phrase and the song behind it.

EDIT: I made a video for the song and linked it here. :)
