Last Sunday, we organized a sportfest called Octoberfest. We planned it for weeks and I can say that it was successful. Yey!
The purpose of our Octoberfest is to bring the Antiochers together as a community. It is purely a bonding activity, keeping in mind the importance of health and fitness so we can be of greater service to God, the church and the whole community. I think we had enough bonding last Sunday and others realized that it is fun to be with co-Antiochers. That's why I can say that the event was a success.
We prepared five games: three Philippine Games and two Ball Games which are the main event, and almost all of the members have waited for. But before the games, we had a simple program started with a prayer followed by pledge of sportsmanship and team line-ups. The two teams were Red Warriors and Pink Panther. We explained the rules and we're all ready to play and have fun.
They were like children when they played and I loved to watch them that way. By the way, I was one of the organizers so I played as watcher, scorer, etc. I only got to play basketball since some members were already tired. They played Patintero, Sack Race and Human Tug-of-war for the first part and you could see their competitive spirit to win the game. Especially when we headed to Volleyball and Basketball.

Unfortunately, during basketball, one of our members hit a volleyball post standing in the basketball court while running fast. The impact was so high that her head (upper-left) broke. It was an accident. We applied first aid and she rushed home with one of our members. And later we found out that she had to undergo three stitches so the wound would heal fast. That was the sad part. We ended the game abruptly and prayed for those who were hurt. But, looking at the bright side, we were lucky that her family knew about the organization and they understood what happened. And oh, the Pink Panther was the overall champion.
Needless to say, we want to have another event like this but I think we need to be more careful with choosing the venue and making sure that we are ready for accidents like that.
